Gov. Kay Ivey Wednesday appointed Judge Ben Bowden to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, replacing Judge Bill Lewis.

“Judge Bowden’s impressive record as a legal scholar is matched by his exemplary performance as an attorney, prosecutor and judge,” Ivey said in a statement. “He has steadfastly demonstrated a dedication to justice and fairness under the law.  I have the utmost confidence that he will serve with the highest integrity.”

Ivey appointed Lewis Tuesday to the Alabama Supreme Court following Justice Jay Mitchell’s resignation Monday. Bowden was the Circuit Judge of the 22nd Judicial Circuit in Covington County since his election in 2016, according to the release.

“I am humbled by the confidence Gov. Ivey has shown in allowing me to serve on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals,” Bowden said in the release. “Angie and I are thrilled at this new opportunity. I’m a public servant at heart and I look forward to serving the people of Alabama in this important and exciting way.”

According to the release, Bowden served in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1992 to 1997 before joining the Air Force Reserves and working at a law firm in Andalusia. He retired from the reserves in 2023 as colonel.
