CPRA wants recreational anglers’ input on Birdfoot Delta project

The state agency in charge of coastal restoration is looking for input from sport fishers on a plan to stop wetland loss at Mississippi River Delta.
The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority will hold a public meeting Oct. 6 in Venice to hear public feedback on the Birdfoot Delta Hydrologic Restoration Project. It will be held from 4- 6 p.m. at the New Orleans Big Game Fishing Club, 235 Cypress Cove Road, behind Cypress Cove Marina.
The project, paid for with BP Deepwater Horizon settlement dollars, aims to restore wetlands and enhance the surrounding habitat for fish and wildlife harmed in the 2010 oil spill. It currently has $6 million in funding, with $2.7 million spent so far. Work is still in the engineering and design phase.
Current plans call for dredging portions of Pass-a-Loutre, South Pass and Southeast Pass to reconnect the Mississippi River with the marshes of the eastern and central parts of the delta. Soil from the dredging will be reused to create marsh and bird nesting habitat.
