Chrissy Teigen will be in Boise on Wednesday to campaign in favor of Proposition 1, which would repeal Idaho’s strict abortion ban laws and provide protections for the procedure.

Proposition 1, also called the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act, also provides protections for access to birth control, in vitro fertilization and privacy in healthcare decisions.

Teigen, who is a New York Times #1 bestselling cookbook author, model, entrepreneur and advocate for maternal health, will meet privately with Idaho mothers to talk with them about how the state’s abortion ban laws have affected them.

She’ll then speak at a “Yes on Prop 1” rally, to be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Treefort Music Hall, to encourage Idahoans to cast their ballots during the final days of early voting. The Treefort Music Hall is located at 722 W. Broad St. in Downtown Boise, and the rally is open to the public.

Idahoans will decide the outcome of Proposition 1 during the Nov. 3 general election. It would take a simple majority of “yes” votes across the state to approve Prop 1.

Under Idaho’s abortion ban laws, it is a felony to perform nearly any abortion, except to prevent the death of the mother, or in cases of rape and incest in the first trimester with a police report. Doctors in Idaho can be sued for a minimum of $20,000 and be criminally prosecuted for performing an abortion.

“In September 2020, Teigen underwent a medically necessary abortion at 20 weeks after experiencing a partial placental abruption, a serious pregnancy complication that put her health at risk,” a press release announcing Teigen’s appearance said. “The pregnancy was deeply wanted, but the baby was not expected to survive, and continuing the pregnancy posed serious risks to Teigen’s health.”

Idaho’s abortion ban laws do not carve out an exception to protect a mother’s health, and instead only has an exception to prevent her death.

Teigen, who lived in Idaho Falls as a teen, is married to singer and pianist John Legend. They have four children.
