Benson wins key victory over James as Michigan’s next governor, continuing Dem control
Democratic nominee and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has declared victory in Michigan’s gubernatorial election, addressing supporters early Wednesday in Detroit.
“This election, from the western reaches of the Upper Peninsula to downtown Detroit, voters sent a clear message: They want leaders who will fight for them, fight to lower costs, fight to grow our economy, fight the corruption that too often protects the powerful and hurts the people. And in this election, we showed the nation that in our democracy, the power of the people will always rule the day,” Benson said.
The Associated Press officially called the race for Benson at 1:45 a.m., with unofficial results showing her out ahead of James 53.7% to 44.6%. Benson has already launched a website with information about the transition and opportunities to join the incoming administration.
Benson held a convincing lead in the majority of polls and outraised James throughout the election, though he received an influx of money in the final days from major donors.
Benson’s victory is historic in a number of ways — it would be the first time in more than 50 years a party has retained control of the Michigan governor’s office after an incumbent governor finished their term. The last time was 1969 when Republican William Milliken succeeded incumbent Republican Gov. George Romney.
With her running mate, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids), Benson and Brinks will also be the first all-female governing duo in Michigan.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer congratulated Benson on the victory.
“I know that Governor-elect Benson will always put Michigan first. She will work with anyone to get things done and won’t let anyone mess with Michigan. She’s a tough, principled leader who doesn’t back down from hard fights, and Michigan is lucky to have her as our next governor,” Whitmer said in a statement.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
