Sterilizing History

Classrooms and statehouses across the country have become fertile ground for the newest wave of culture wars — how the next generation is taught to view the U.S. and its often dark past with race, gender and equality. Conservatives are leading the backlash through legislation, attempting to restrict how teachers and even employers can discuss what they consider “divisive concepts.” The result, critics argue, is distorting history, chilling free speech and promoting ignorance.
